AcuChinese acupuncture has a 2000 year history. Today hair fine sterile needles are placed in various locations on the body to relieve pain and influence body function. There are several ways to explain how acupuncture works.

In traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture is used to affect to flow of what is called "Qi" (pronounced chee). Qi is the animating force of the body. Qi gives us our get up and go. Qi flows through the body in a prescribed manner regulating the function of organs and the flow of blood. Qi rises and flows on the surface of the body through what are called channels or meridians. Each channel has an association with and organ system or body function and along the channels reside the acupuncture points. Good health is maintained by unobstructed flow of the Qi through all the channels. When there is ill health, injury, or trauma the flow of Qi has become obstructed resulting in pain or dysfunction. An acupuncturist utilizes traditional diagnosis to determine what acupuncture points and techniques are best used to restore the flow of Qi and hence good health.

Western science has been investigating acupuncture for years and more work is being done today than ever before. We  know that acupuncture influences the function of the endocrine system increasing the release of hormones that reduce pain, increase circulation, calm the nervous system, and regulate immunity. It has been shown that acupuncture releases the bodies own painkillers called endorphins. Endorphins are better at regulating pain than even the most potent pain medications. Acupuncture has been shown to relax muscle spasms, relieve migraine headaches, and increase fertility.  It is an exciting time as more research reveals how this ancient technique influences the bodies own ability to heal.  Acupuncture can treat a wide variety of conditions.  See the questions section for more information about acupuncture.  If you have specific issues you would like to address please contact Health Wise Acupuncture.
